FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Retrofitting Oil Rigs into Sustainable Urban Spaces

Award-winning architect Vicky Chan introduces Skyrig, a pioneering project retrofitting oil rigs into high-rise modular structures for sustainable urban living in Lagos, Nigeria. The project aims to provide equitable, reliable, and sustainable living in the downtown area, referencing the city’s past in the oil industry while promoting renewable energy and circular living.

SkyRig aims to replace the existing oil rigs in water with three high-rise modular structures to provide housing, retail, commercial, and public amenities. The complex will offer 1280 affordable units for work and live, along with 9000m2 of outdoor green space for the community. The innovative modular construction approach involves the use of pre-fabricated modules, which are assembled on-site to create a fully functional building, reducing construction time and minimizing waste and carbon emissions.

By incorporating features such as floating foundations, water-tight seals, and amphibious vehicles, these buildings can adapt to rising water levels and remain functional during flooding events. The project is a testament to creativity and innovation transforming existing structures into sustainable, functional, and beautiful spaces that benefit both people and the environment.
