Charis, an innovative interior space by Hiroki Takahashi, has been honored with the Iron A' Design Award 2025 for its harmonious fusion of traditional Japanese kumiko craftsmanship, luxurious stone, and modern metal elements, redefining aesthetic balance in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Charis, designed by acclaimed architect Hiroki Takahashi, has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award 2025 in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category. Located in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, and scheduled for completion in September 2024, Charis stands out for its unique integration of traditional Japanese kumiko woodworking, natural stone, and modern metal. This project exemplifies a sophisticated blend of cultural heritage and contemporary aesthetics, offering a fresh perspective on interior space design.
The inspiration behind Charis stems from the desire to create a new aesthetic equilibrium by merging contrasting materials. Stone and wood, with their natural warmth and calming textures, are paired with the cool, sleek impression of metal. Kumiko, a centuries-old Japanese craft, introduces intricate geometric patterns that evoke history and cultural depth. The result is a space where metallic accents and glassware subtly reflect light, marble and granite provide luxury and durability, and kumiko woodwork casts dynamic shadows, adding movement and depth.
Charis was realized through meticulous research and advanced CAD simulations, ensuring visual harmony and functional excellence. The design process involved overcoming the challenge of uniting diverse materials-such as Sicilian marble, Patagonian granite, and Japanese kumiko-into a cohesive whole. The interplay of light, shadow, and texture was carefully studied to enhance the spatial experience, making Charis a sophisticated environment that leaves a lasting impression on visitors. The project's recognition by the A' Design Award underscores its contribution to both industry best practices and the evolution of modern interior design.
