Setagaya-ku, Japan - June 2025 - Taro SHIMOKAWA's Ondsauna has been honored with the Bronze A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award, recognizing its unique approach to fostering community and connection in public sauna spaces through innovative architectural design inspired by nature and Japanese sensibilities.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ondsauna, designed by Taro SHIMOKAWA, reimagines the traditional sauna experience by blending Japanese concepts of closeness with architectural elements that encourage both privacy and social interaction. Unlike conventional public saunas in Japan, which often lack a sense of community, Ondsauna introduces "non-intrusive" vertical walls that evoke the upward growth of trees and create a sociopetal environment. The design draws inspiration from the forest, using verticality and strategic spacing to modulate intimacy and invite nature into the space, allowing guests to experience a sense of shared understanding without forced proximity.
The architectural innovation of Ondsauna is evident in its irregular polygonal floor plan, which guides sightlines and offers varied scenic views. Research into human interaction informed the placement of obtuse-angled benches, which balance opportunities for conversation with personal privacy. The sauna's layout features a spiraling path that ascends from the entrance at GL+250 to a cold plunge deck at GL+1000, culminating in a rooftop relaxation area at GL+3250. This vertical flow mirrors the growth of trees and allows visitors to transition naturally from sauna to cold plunge to open air, ultimately enjoying panoramic views at treetop height.
Technically, Ondsauna utilizes a 150mm CLT floor slab, eliminating beams and non-perpendicular joints for efficient construction and labor savings. The rational assembly of modular wall units and the CLT slab not only streamline the building process but also reinforce the sociopetal nature of the structure. The result is a space that harmonizes with its forest surroundings, enhances quality of life, and exemplifies best practices in art, science, and design. This innovative approach has earned Ondsauna the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award, celebrating its contribution to architectural excellence and community well-being.
