FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Martyrs' Maze, designed by Moohan Kim and the ITLs team, has been awarded the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in Landscape Planning and Garden Design for 2025. Located within the Gaegab Martyrdom Shrine in Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea, this meditative sanctuary offers visitors a unique journey of introspection, inspired by the pilgrimage and resilience of Catholic martyrs. The project, completed in August 2024, stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in fostering spiritual connection and honoring historical legacy.
The sanctuary features a winding maze path that mirrors the pilgrim's journey, encouraging slow, mindful movement and deep reflection. Constructed with CNC-cut stainless steel and HPL panels, the maze is complemented by benches crafted from reclaimed wood and volcanic stone flooring, seamlessly integrating tradition with contemporary artistry. The use of sustainable, weather-resistant materials ensures the space's longevity while paying homage to both environmental responsibility and the site's historical significance.
Realized through advanced CNC technology and meticulous craftsmanship, Martyrs' Maze was developed after extensive research and collaboration with local historians and community members. The design addresses the challenge of balancing reverence for the past with innovative spatial solutions, creating a harmonious environment that invites visitors to honor the martyrs' legacy. The Bronze A' Design Award recognizes Martyrs' Maze for its creative ingenuity, technical excellence, and meaningful contribution to quality of life and cultural heritage.
