Masakatsu Matsuyama's Global Crest Kita Omura Redefines Car Dealership Architecture in Nagasaki

JAPAN -- /ARCHITECTURE/newswire -- Aug 05, 2024

Global Crest Kita Omura, designed by Masakatsu Matsuyama and completed in January 2024 in Omura, Nagasaki, Japan, transforms the traditional car dealership model with an innovative, landscape-integrated showroom that acts as architectural signage, offering a new vision for automotive retail environments.

Innovative Glass-Fronted Showroom Blends Seamlessly with Omura's Scenic Landscape

Global Crest Kita Omura, the latest project by acclaimed architect Masakatsu Matsuyama, sets a new benchmark for car dealership design in Japan. Located in the rural expanse of northern Omura City, Nagasaki, the 705.68-square-meter showroom was conceived to challenge the conventional roadside sub-dealer format. Instead of relegating the shop building to the background, Matsuyama's design brings the architecture to the forefront, making the building itself a striking landmark and a visual invitation to visitors.

The design harmonizes with its unique setting, flanked by Omura Bay to the west and the Tatara Mountains to the east. A 4-meter grid system supported by slender 75mm steel columns allows for a dramatic cantilevered roof, while expansive glass facades on three sides blur the boundary between interior and exterior. This transparency not only frames the surrounding landscape but also connects the process of vehicle handovers and customer interactions to the natural beauty outside, creating a sense of openness and calm rarely found in automotive retail spaces.

Energy efficiency and structural innovation are at the heart of the project. The minimal steel columns and fully glazed walls maximize daylight and views, while the thick roof provides shelter for vehicle deliveries and customer viewings, even in inclement weather. The interplay between the robust roof and delicate supports creates a subtle tension, emphasizing both strength and lightness. The result is an environment that elevates the car-buying experience, making it as memorable as the vehicles themselves. The project, which began in May 2022 and concluded in January 2024, stands as a testament to Matsuyama's philosophy of interpreting the land's potential and crafting architecture uniquely suited to its place and purpose.
