The Sequence in Grating, designed by Che Yung Kung and completed in February 2024, redefines residential living by transforming a 107-square-meter home into a poetic interplay of light, material, and space. Drawing inspiration from the phenomenon of grating diffraction, the project explores how both natural and artificial light can shape and animate interiors, making the passage of time visible through shifting patterns and textures. The design's foundation lies in the belief that light is the ultimate designer, capable of telling stories and evoking emotion within a space.
To achieve this vision, the team employed a series of innovative techniques, including irregular wood veneer facades, wooden grille cabinet doors, and aluminum extruded light bars that interact with the grilles to create a dance of virtual and real shadows. The removal of non-essential rooms expanded the living area, enhancing both natural illumination and opportunities for family interaction. Carefully selected materials-such as stone, metal, and silk curtains-were chosen for their timelessness and ability to amplify the effects of light, while a tone-on-tone color palette and curated lighting plan further elevate the home's artistic ambiance.
Inspired by architectural history from the Roman Pantheon to the works of Tadao Ando, Che Yung Kung's design research focused on the relationship between light, material, and spatial experience. The project's fully customized details, such as the handcrafted 10mm x 10mm wooden grille cabinet doors, reflect a commitment to craftsmanship and uniqueness. Overcoming technical challenges, the team meticulously balanced form and function, ensuring that every element contributed to a harmonious and expressive environment. The result is a residence that not only meets practical needs but also serves as a living diary, recording the ever-changing qualities of light and fostering meaningful connections among its inhabitants.
