Crafting 1000 Scenes Coffee Shop by Hou-Chun Chen Wins Iron A' Design Award for Innovative Urban Sanctuary

TAIWAN (CHINA) -- /ARCHITECTURE/newswire -- Jul 21, 2024

Hou-Chun Chen's "Crafting 1000 Scenes" coffee shop, located in Beitou District, Taipei City, Taiwan, has been honored with the Iron A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award 2025 for its unique blend of artistic spatial storytelling, eco-conscious materials, and immersive sensory experiences, transforming an apparel store into a tranquil urban retreat.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Award-Winning "Crafting 1000 Scenes" Coffee Shop Redefines Urban Spaces with Light, Mirrors, and Seasonal Inspiration

The "Crafting 1000 Scenes" coffee shop, designed by Hou-Chun Chen in collaboration with YANGFU DESIGN and HAO HONG LIN, stands as a testament to innovative interior design in the heart of Taipei's Beitou District. Completed in August 2023, this project transforms a former apparel store into a vibrant, two-story coffee sanctuary, offering a sensory-rich environment that echoes the poetic meaning behind its Chinese name, "Chian Jing"-a thousand scenes. By layering light, shadow, and mirror effects, the design crafts an ever-changing narrative that invites visitors to explore and unwind.

Unlike typical coffee shops that prioritize merchandise or seating arrangements, "Crafting 1000 Scenes" employs a thoughtful mix of materials-mirror surfaces, decorative coatings, metalwork, melamine boards, and flame-retardant PVC tiles-to evoke the scenic transitions of the seasons. The first floor's 4-meter vaulted turquoise ceiling, accented by brass pendant lights, creates a sense of spaciousness and classic British flair, while continuous mirrors from the façade to the ceiling visually expand the narrow, 66-square-meter space. The second floor features a bar and seating area with custom furniture, linear lighting, and a black-and-white palette, ensuring comfort and elegance even in the absence of natural light.

Sustainability and well-being are at the core of the design philosophy. The project minimizes synthetic materials, opting for low-VOC wood panels and eco-friendly paints to ensure a healthy environment. Large glass doors at the entrance provide a buffer from the bustling street, while strategic window placements and color choices optimize light and visual flow. Every detail-from the interplay of light and shadow to the aroma of specialty coffee-enhances the interaction between people and their surroundings, making "Crafting 1000 Scenes" a hidden urban sanctuary and a model for future retail and hospitality spaces. This innovative approach has earned the project the Iron A' Design Award, recognizing its excellence in practical, artistic, and sustainable design.
