Award-Winning "Whispers of Light" Redefines Residential Design with Watercolor-Inspired Aesthetics and Family-Centric Functionality

"Whispers of Light," a residential house designed by Chou-Chun, Kao, has been awarded the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category for 2025. Located in the heart of Taipei City, this project stands out for its innovative approach, transforming a newly built apartment into a tranquil, artful living space that reflects the homeowner's love for watercolor painting. The design process, spanning from July 2022 to August 2023, focused on merging two units and overcoming structural challenges to create a harmonious and functional environment for a modern family.

Inspired by the delicate hues and layered depth of watercolor art, the interior employs warm gray and beige mineral paints, wooden elements, and natural stone with green-gold accents to evoke a dreamlike atmosphere. The space is thoughtfully divided: public areas form a central hub for family interaction and entertaining guests, while private quarters are positioned on either side to ensure privacy and minimize disruption. Light fixtures and reflective surfaces further enhance the watercolor effect, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow throughout the home.

The project's technical execution showcases a blend of advanced materials and creative solutions. Mineral paint gradients, titanium-coated metal panels, and embossed glass are combined to address structural challenges, such as integrating a large beam into the circulation path without compromising spatial openness. Rounded corners and mirrored finishes soften architectural lines, while a multi-zoned kitchen and pass-through window support the homeowner's lifestyle and frequent hosting. The result is a living space that balances connectivity, privacy, and artistic expression, setting a new benchmark for residential design in Taipei.
