FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Itomachi Hotel 0, designed by Ikuma Watase, marks a significant milestone as Japan's first hotel to achieve Net Zero Energy Building (ZEB) certification. Completed in March 2024 and opened in May, the hotel is situated in Saijo, Ehime, a region renowned for its pristine Uchinuki groundwater and distinctive Iyo Blue Stone. By harnessing these unique local resources, the project not only delivers an immersive guest experience but also serves as a catalyst for the revitalization of the local community.
The hotel's design centers around the abundant Uchinuki water, with open-format washbasins featured in each guest room and a central courtyard where the soothing sound of water resonates throughout the property. The use of Iyo Blue Stone, which shifts in tone depending on moisture, is reflected in the color palette and materials, creating a harmonious connection between the interior, landscape, and the surrounding environment. Villa-type accommodations offer open-air baths with natural hot spring water, allowing guests to experience both cold and hot water resources unique to Saijo.
Sustainability is at the core of Itomachi Hotel 0, with solar power systems, ecological materials, and recycled elements integrated throughout the property. The hotel also incorporates traditional local crafts, such as washi paper and ceramics, supporting local artisans and job creation. Designed to attract urban workers seeking workation opportunities and business travelers, the hotel features co-working spaces and communal kitchens, making it a versatile destination for extended stays. By blending environmental responsibility with local culture, Itomachi Hotel 0 stands as a model for future hospitality projects in rural Japan.
