In August 2023, CHIU MENG LING completed the transformation of a 40-year-old building in Taichung City, Taiwan, into the "Great Wall" design club, masterfully preserving traditional elements while infusing modern functionality. This innovative project has now received the Iron A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award 2025, recognizing its success in harmonizing cultural heritage with contemporary living.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The "Great Wall" project by CHIU MENG LING stands as a testament to the creative revitalization of historic architecture. Set in a quiet corner of Taichung City, this three-story, 188.4-square-meter structure was thoughtfully reimagined as the designer's brand club. Drawing inspiration from the charm of traditional Taiwanese culture and the surrounding environment, the design preserves original terrazzo flooring and vintage window gratings, while introducing a Japanese-style heritage house concept. The result is a warm, inviting space that fosters a sense of belonging for visitors and users alike.
Key features of the renovation include an innovative skylight in the first-floor washroom, where vintage window gratings filter sunlight to create a unique interplay of light and shadow. A "skylight-like" ceiling with integrated lighting mimics natural daylight, brightening the interiors and enhancing the vintage ambiance. The staircase, inspired by ink-wash painting, transforms a functional element into a striking visual centerpiece, with cascading hues extending to display windows and tiles. A bold orange door set against pristine white walls injects energy and modernity, ensuring the building stands out in its historic neighborhood.
The project's realization involved meticulous craftsmanship and sustainable practices. Original materials, such as solid wood lintels, were repurposed for baseboards and door frames, adding layers of nostalgia and cultural depth. The design overcame significant challenges, including structural reinforcement, manual labor in a narrow alley, and the resolution of skylight leakage. Each floor is carefully arranged for flexible use-combining living, working, and reception spaces-while accent colors like mint green and warm beige gold infuse freshness and vibrancy. The club's thoughtful restoration has resonated with visitors, bridging generations and inspiring new concepts for future living.
