Rodrigo Ohtake's Ibiuna Prefabricated, a modular weekend house designed for his family in Ibiuna, Brazil, has been honored with the Iron A' Design Award 2025 for its creative approach to prefabrication, blending industrial efficiency with bespoke design to create a harmonious retreat in nature.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Rodrigo Ohtake's Ibiuna Prefabricated Weekend House, located in Ibiuna, São Paulo, Brazil, is a striking example of how modular architecture can transcend its traditional limitations. Designed as a country retreat for Ohtake, his wife, and their three children, the house was conceived to provide a serene escape from city life, encouraging relaxation and a deep connection with the surrounding natural landscape. The project, completed between June and December 2023, stands as a testament to Ohtake's vision of integrating man-made structures harmoniously within nature.
What sets the Ibiuna Prefabricated apart is its innovative use of modular construction without sacrificing individuality or aesthetic appeal. Working within the constraints of Syshaus's modular system, Ohtake arranged the prefabricated rooms apart from each other, creating a central "void" that serves as the home's social heart-housing the living, dining, and kitchen areas under a distinctive industrial curved roof. Curved blue steel walls and eaves break the rigidity of the rectangular modules, providing privacy and visual intrigue while ensuring the house feels anything but standard or repetitive.
The house's construction utilizes thermo-insulated industrial walls clad in aluminum, perforated steel plates for the curved facades, and industrial steel beams for the ceiling. The vibrant orange interior contrasts with the lush green surroundings, embodying Ohtake's philosophy that color brings joy and energy. Custom-designed furniture and a uniquely curved pool further distinguish the home, while the absence of curtains in the bedrooms allows the family to wake up immersed in nature. The project's rationalized construction process minimized waste and maximized thermal efficiency, making it both environmentally responsible and visually compelling.
Beyond its function as a family retreat, the Ibiuna Prefabricated serves as a model for a new line of customizable modular homes by Syshaus, capable of being delivered across Brazil in as little as 120 days. The adaptable design allows for personalized layouts and finishes, ensuring each home can reflect the unique needs and tastes of its inhabitants. The project's recognition with the Iron A' Design Award 2025 underscores its success in merging industrial practicality with creative expression, setting a new standard for prefabricated architecture.
