"Sanctuary": A Minimalist Duplex Home Blending Nature, Light, and Modern Comfort in Tainan, Taiwan

"Sanctuary," designed by LI WEN CHANG, stands as a testament to the power of minimalist design in residential architecture. Located in Tainan, Taiwan, this 819.83-square-meter duplex was completed in March 2023 and has now been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award 2025. The project was inspired by the homeowners' desire for a bright, comfortable environment that blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living. By maximizing natural light and embracing the surrounding ocean landscape, the design creates a poetic and serene atmosphere that elevates everyday life.

Distinctive for its single-unit-per-floor layout, "Sanctuary" employs simplicity and open spaces to foster a sense of spaciousness and tranquility. The design features large windows that invite the seascape indoors, while a striking spiral staircase serves as both a functional connector and a visual centerpiece. The staircase's gold hollow railing and the use of imported furniture contribute to a refined yet understated elegance. A restrained color palette, dominated by whites and natural wood tones, enhances the home's airy feel and supports a seamless flow between living areas.

Technically, the project overcame the challenges of an unfinished duplex by optimizing spatial dimensions and addressing structural elements such as vertical beams. The design rejects ornate decoration in favor of clean lines and energy-efficient lighting, including segmented LED circuits to minimize daily energy consumption. Natural materials and soft color tones further reinforce the home's cozy, modern ambiance. Through meticulous attention to detail, "Sanctuary" not only meets professional and industrial standards but also provides a sophisticated, sustainable retreat that connects its residents with nature and light.
