Pu Tang Restaurant: A Harmonious Fusion of Nature, Culture, and Contemporary Dining in Nanjing

Pu Tang, designed by Zhao Yunhai and the team at Cloud Ocean Design Co., Ltd, has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award 2025 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. Opened in March 2024 at 124-a11 Hengshan Road, Jianye District, Nanjing, the restaurant stands out for its innovative integration of natural elements and local cultural values within a refined dining environment. The project reimagines the traditional restaurant experience by introducing a visual corridor that brings nature directly into the space, featuring ecological stones, water features, moss, and ferns to create a living landscape that blurs the boundaries between indoors and outdoors.

The design's unique approach involved removing the central floor slab of the original building, allowing for the creation of an inner courtyard that supports plant growth and floods the interior with natural light. This architectural intervention not only maximizes spatial flexibility and depth but also enhances the sensory experience for guests. The restaurant is thoughtfully divided into seven private rooms and a tea room, each themed around the spiritual totems of the literati-plums, orchids, bamboo, chrysanthemums, and more-offering independent zones for visual, acoustic, olfactory, and tactile enjoyment.

Covering 1,284 square meters, Pu Tang was realized using sustainable landscape design principles, natural marble, and wood paneling. The project's meticulous attention to ecological harmony and cultural resonance has resulted in a space that feels both intimate and expansive, providing guests with a boundless landscape experience within a limited footprint. The restaurant's success in marrying art, nature, and hospitality has not only elevated the local dining scene but also set a new standard for sustainable and culturally rooted interior design in China and beyond.
