Zhenbaoguan: A Museum-Inspired Private Gallery Celebrating Art, Wine, and Oriental Symmetry

Zhenbaoguan, designed by Zhao Yunhai of Cloud Ocean Design Co., Ltd, redefines the private collection experience by merging the display principles of museums with the intimate atmosphere of a personal gallery. Completed in December 2024 in Nanjing, the 750-square-meter space was conceived to highlight the owner's extensive art and wine collection. The design maximizes visual impact through carefully orchestrated lighting and a layout that guides visitors effortlessly through the exhibits, ensuring each piece is experienced at its best.

The project's unique approach lies in its use of black wood finishes and stone throughout the cabinets, ceiling, and floors, subtly minimizing visual distractions and directing attention to the displayed artworks. Custom-designed cabinet lighting illuminates only the art, not the surfaces, allowing each object to shine without interference. The wine wall, a central feature, is arranged with strict oriental symmetry, reflecting both Confucian ideals of balance and Taoist concepts of yin and yang, creating a solemn sense of order and harmony.

Every aspect of Zhenbaoguan is meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of calm and spirituality, blending modern minimalism with traditional Chinese aesthetics. The spatial design incorporates rhythmic turns and transitions, encouraging visitors to pause and reflect, while the overall color palette remains light and elegant. The space not only serves as a gallery and entertaining venue but also accommodates the owner's residential and office needs, achieving a rare balance between functionality and artistry. This innovative vision has earned Zhenbaoguan the Golden A' Design Award, recognizing its outstanding contribution to interior, retail, and exhibition design.
