"Quiet Contemplation": Award-Winning Wabi-Sabi Residential Design in Taichung, Taiwan

Fabio Su's latest project, "Quiet Contemplation," has garnered international acclaim by securing the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category for 2025. Completed in November 2023 in Taichung City, Taiwan, this residential space is a testament to the designer's commitment to blending natural aesthetics with functional living. Drawing inspiration from the wabi-sabi philosophy, Su has crafted an environment that encourages relaxation and introspection, offering residents a peaceful retreat from the fast-paced urban lifestyle.

The design stands out for its minimalist approach, eschewing excessive ornamentation in favor of natural textures and materials. Su utilized mineral paint, stone, rattan, solid wood, and artistic coatings to evoke a sense of warmth and authenticity throughout the home. A central patio in the ceiling invites natural light into the interior, while an intelligent lighting control system allows for dynamic atmospheres that shift with the time of day and residents' moods. The interplay of sunlight and shadow, combined with carefully selected furnishings, creates a living space that is both visually striking and deeply calming.

From the outset, the project was shaped by close collaboration with the homeowner, who sought a space defined by leisure and comfort. The design team overcame challenges such as limited floor height and complex pipeline configurations by integrating organic, irregular lines and maximizing spatial flow. Every detail, from circulation planning to material selection, was meticulously considered to ensure a harmonious balance between form and function. The result is a home that not only embodies the essence of wabi-sabi but also enhances the quality of life for its inhabitants, offering a sanctuary where tranquility and beauty coexist.
