Lo Hsiao-Li's "Merry Individual Habitats" in Taipei City has been honored with the Iron A' Design Award 2025 for its pioneering approach to residential design, offering mature couples a harmonious balance between shared and private living spaces inspired by Japanese aesthetics.

"Merry Individual Habitats," designed by Lo Hsiao-Li and team, redefines residential living for mature couples by introducing a thoughtful spatial arrangement that supports both togetherness and independence. Drawing inspiration from Japanese design, the 136-square-meter home in Taipei City features light, natural wood tones and architectural elements such as curved cabinetry and glass lattice doors, evoking the serene ambiance of an "inner-Machiya." The project's unique layout, with a 2/3 to 1/3 ratio of shared to private spaces, addresses the evolving needs of couples who value both companionship and personal autonomy, especially as they approach retirement.
The design's standout feature is its "friendly separation" concept, which creates two distinct yet interconnected lifestyles within a single residence. Private working and sleeping areas are tailored for couples with differing routines and work-from-home requirements, ensuring minimal disturbance and maximum comfort. Bedrooms and studies are conceived as "rooms within rooms," with innovative solutions like folding doors for temporary privacy and a central hallway separating individual sleeping quarters. This spatial strategy allows each partner to enjoy their own routines while still sharing communal areas filled with natural light.
Addressing the challenges of aging populations and shifting relationship dynamics, the project's research highlights the growing desire for "living separately in the same household." By reconfiguring room functions and bathroom entrances with minimal structural changes, the design achieves significant functional improvements while reducing renovation waste. The result is a sustainable, adaptable, and emotionally supportive environment that fosters healthier relationships and personal well-being. The recognition from the A' Design Award underscores the project's contribution to innovative, practical, and emotionally fulfilling residential design.
