Junghee Lee's Fish Farm House, a one-story residence in Geoje, South Korea, has been honored with the Silver A' Design Award 2019 for its harmonious integration with the sea and surrounding landscape, blending modern exposed concrete with traditional materials to create a unique, user-focused living space that celebrates the client's deep connection to the ocean.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Completed in August 2016, Fish Farm House by Junghee Lee and 2m2 architects stands as a testament to the profound relationship between architecture and nature. Located in Geoje, South Korea, the project was inspired by the client's lifelong bond with the sea, which serves as both home and livelihood. The design centers on openness to the ocean, with the structure thoughtfully positioned to greet the water, while the rear of the house frames a tranquil reed field and the distant Mt. Dongmang, creating a seamless dialogue between the built environment and its natural context.
The house distinguishes itself through the innovative use of exposed concrete-a material uncommon in the local fishing village-combined with familiar elements like stone and wood. This blend of materials ensures the home feels both contemporary and rooted in its surroundings. Achieving this balance required meticulous attention to detail and close collaboration with contractors, allowing each material's unique properties to be expressed authentically. The result is a shelter that is both striking and welcoming, reflecting the client's desire for a home in tune with the rhythms of the sea.
Fish Farm House's layout prioritizes the daily satisfaction and lifestyle of its residents. Spaces are organized to foster fluid movement and interaction, with a transitional entrance placed between the living room and kitchen, and large pocket doors that enable flexible use of the living area. A central family room acts as a buffer between indoors and outdoors, while limestone finishes distinguish the inner and outer walls. Despite initial site challenges, including uniform land formation and elevation differences, the design embraces the natural contours, turning potential obstacles into opportunities for unique spatial experiences. Recognized with the Silver A' Design Award, Fish Farm House exemplifies excellence in architectural innovation and sensitivity to place.
