Junghee Lee's Daebong-dong Commercial Skip Floor in Daegu, South Korea, has earned the prestigious Silver A' Design Award for its creative use of skip floor architecture, blending seamlessly with the neighborhood while offering a unique spatial experience for visitors.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Daebong-dong Commercial Skip Floor, designed by Junghee Lee, has been recognized with a Silver A' Design Award for Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2018. Located in the vibrant city of Daegu, South Korea, the project stands out for its innovative approach to commercial space, utilizing a skip floor layout to transform a two-story building into a dynamic, four-level experience. The design was inspired by the evolving character of the neighborhood, which has become a popular destination for young people following the creation of Kim Gwangseok's streets in 2010.
Rather than dominating the streetscape, the building was intentionally designed to harmonize with its surroundings, occupying only a third of the legally permitted maximum size. The skip floor concept divides the generous floor area into intimate zones, with exposed concrete walls and wooden louvers adding both texture and warmth. The structure features pine-wood exposed concrete, red cedar, and low-e glass, creating a modern yet inviting atmosphere that encourages community interaction.
Junghee Lee's design addresses both functional and aesthetic challenges, such as the creation of a custom wooden louver folding door and the integration of a skylight to maximize natural light. The result is a commercial cafe that not only meets the needs of its users but also elevates the architectural landscape of Daegu. The project's success is a testament to thoughtful design, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of urban context.
