Ya-Jung HSIEH's residential house project "Paper for Light" wins the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2021 for its innovative use of natural materials and oriental paper art to create a serene and eco-friendly living space in New Taipei City.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ya-Jung HSIEH's "Paper for Light" is a residential house project that reimagines the use of natural materials, particularly paper, to create a serene and eco-friendly living space. Inspired by the importance of natural materials, the project aims to reduce the usage of plastic, artificial light, and air conditioning by utilizing wood, paper, and Diatom mud. The oriental paper art concept is applied to mediate the intensity of light, creating an ambiguous boundary for space and reducing the reliance on artificial lighting.
The unique properties of the design include the use of the Shoji Gate to mediate the intensity of light, the incorporation of wood and timber structures to balance humidity, and the creation of a calm space for meditation. The project also features the concept of Origami, expressed through the form of the ceiling and the patterns of the Shoji Gate, creating a space that responds to nature through the layers of light and the movement of the Shoji Gate and Origami.
The 100 square meter space features semi-transparent Shoji Gates that not only mediate the intensity and softness of natural light but also lead airflow, reducing the need for artificial light and air conditioning. The project also incorporates a cantilever bench that serves as both a seating area and a track for the Shoji Gate, providing flexibility and reducing the need for additional furniture.
Ya-Jung HSIEH's "Paper for Light" project was completed in January 2018 in New Taipei City and was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2021 for its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that contributes to quality of life improvements and makes the world a better place.
