Chu Kochen College Renovation by 2408 Studio

2408 Studio, led by Bennet Marburger and Dr. Ji Zhang, has completed the transformation of a dormitory building at Zhejiang University into a multifunctional space for Chu Kochen Honors College. The project, which started in August 2019 and finished in November 2020, is located in Hangzhou, China.

The renovation project, covering an area of 2,800 m2, aimed to create a model project that could serve as a prototype for upcoming dormitory projects. The design includes various spaces like lobbies, classrooms, self-study rooms, offices, exhibition spaces, recreational rooms, public kitchens, and guest suites, providing a wide range of rooms for collegiate everyday life within the existing structure of the dormitory.

The design is characterized by its functional and minimalistic approach, utilizing natural stone, wood, white metal board, and plaster as the main materials in the public spaces. Linear lights, spots, and indirect lighting create a bright and modern atmosphere, while custom-made furniture in wood, anthracite, and white adds to the functional and elegant appearance of the rooms.

One of the notable challenges overcome in the project was the transformation of several rooms to create larger spaces, incorporating columns and glass walls to enhance flexibility and create a more generous atmosphere. The design team used BIM throughout the whole design process to combine interior design, furniture planning, and lighting design into a holistic overall planning.

Chu Kochen College Renovation by 2408 Studio was awarded Bronze in the A' Design Award 2021 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that sets a new standard for dormitory projects.
