The Return to the Mountain Woods project, designed by Kevin Chu, is a stunning residential and club space located in Taichung, Taiwan. Inspired by the concept of returning to nature, the 350 square meter apartment is transformed into a majestic living space that seamlessly integrates modern design with natural elements. The project was completed in 2018 and has garnered significant acclaim for its innovative approach to spatial planning and design.
Chu's design incorporates a variety of materials, including marble, stone, veneer, titanium plating, and steel panel, to create a modern yet inviting atmosphere. The use of dark wood colors in the foyer and spilled ink marble in the screen design evokes a sense of tranquility and flowing water, while the living room, dining room, and central island bar counter are strategically positioned to structure the reception area, creating a grand sense of space.
The design also features unique elements such as a television wall using coarse grey Andesite to accentuate the natural solidness of stone material, and a dining room with a penetrative light fixture that resembles starlight against a dark grey background, evoking the image of the night sky. The project successfully overcame creative and technical challenges, such as concealing dressing room and storage functions behind cabinets in the master bedroom, and ingeniously transforming non-ideal indoor spaces into functional areas.
Kevin Chu's Return to the Mountain Woods project was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2020, recognizing its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that authentically integrates experience and resourcefulness, contributing to quality of life improvements.
