Natalia Kokosalaki's Askianos is a breathtaking single-family house nestled in the Cretan hills, drawing inspiration from traditional Cretan architecture and the natural environment. The design seamlessly integrates local materials such as stone and ocher, showcasing the craftsmanship of local artists and artisans throughout the home. From built-in furniture to handcrafted ceramic tiles, Askianos embodies the essence of pure Cretan living.
Askianos stands out as a summer house designed for a family, split into two volumes to frame the stunning summer sunset over the sea. The home harmoniously blends into the landscape, inviting both indoor and outdoor living, while incorporating traditional elements of Cretan architecture with a clean, minimalistic design approach.
Environmental and site analysis played a crucial role in shaping Askianos, guiding the orientation of the house to optimize prime views and solar positioning. Local stone and ocher were meticulously incorporated into the construction, with all built-in furniture crafted by local artisans. The design also pays homage to traditional Cretan architecture through the use of wooden windows, doors, and shutters.
Askianos is a testament to meticulous research and design, respecting the local architectural language and promoting the work of local artists and craftsmen. The home offers a tactile connection to the natural environment, with an outdoor shower carved into the rocks and a pool seamlessly integrated into the hillside.
Askianos was completed in 2021 in Listaros, Crete, following extensive environmental analysis and historical research to ensure its seamless integration into the site and the local architectural context. The project overcame challenges such as integrating the design into a small plot of land while respecting the natural topology, including a large rock face designated as a local landmark.
