Makoto Furihata successfully revived the Ryouriyado Yamazaki, a traditional Japanese inn, harmonizing architecture and climate, using traditional materials and techniques.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Makoto Furihata's vision for Ryouriyado Yamazaki, a traditional Japanese inn, involved transforming an RC inn into a wooden structure, harmonizing with the severe climate of the wild ocean in Echizen town, Fukui prefecture, Japan. The project, which began in November 2006 and finished in October 2007, aimed to entertain customers with Echizen cuisine in a wooden healing inn.
The inn, with a scale of two stories, features a main building and an annex building, utilizing materials valued since ancient times, such as wood and stucco. The 120-year-old private house was relocated and repurposed, preserving its historic charm. The project faced challenges in harmonizing heavy old materials with new ones, while maintaining the rusticity and beauty of a Japanese folk house.
Furihata Architectural Design Office's approach to the project earned the Silver A' Design Award in 2018, recognizing the outstanding expertise and innovation demonstrated in the revival of Ryouriyado Yamazaki.
