Muchuan Xu's "Journey to Cloud Culture and Art" canteen design in Jinan, China, has been awarded the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2021. The project, which commenced in December 2019 and concluded in October 2020, is situated in the lush area of Lixia District, Jinan, a central business district. The canteen, designed to be the business card of staff catering culture in the area, offers a multifunctional space for dining, negotiation, and more.
The design inspiration for this project stemmed from the exploration of space elements within the canteen. By incorporating grid design thinking, the design seamlessly integrates sightlines and streamlines to create a relaxed and active atmosphere, breaking away from the traditional hierarchical and sequential layout of staff canteens.
Utilizing a color palette dominated by the blue of science and technology and the green of nature, the canteen's main tone reflects a harmonious blend of modernity and natural elements. The use of large area color patches, plastic materials, and powerful cinematic expression, combined with geometric composition, creates an environment that fosters interaction and expression between lines, materials, and colors.
The space design features an intriguing interplay of large-area artificial stone, metal lines, and green elements, establishing an engaging environmental dialogue in the lobby. The contrast between light and dark, as well as between virtual and real, enriches the artistic atmosphere of the space, highlighting the ecological and futuristic mission of the design.
Notably, the canteen's interior design incorporates classic colors such as green, blue, and yellow, juxtaposed with a layer of representing the unknown gray, resulting in a softer visual experience. Materials like solid wood, metal mesh, and mirror steel are utilized for streamlined functional blocks, complemented by customized seat combinations designed for ergonomic comfort and upholstered in leather materials.
One of the design's standout features is the striking color scheme that captivates visitors upon entering the canteen. The mirror ceiling, in harmony with other indoor elements, guides sightlines and disrupts the traditional sense of class and distance within the space, ensuring that diners experience a unique and visually engaging ambiance regardless of their seating location.
Muchuan Xu's design team, consisting of Minxi Cai, Zhongning Zhang, Junjie Li, Guanbao Ye, Lanting Li, Zhiwei Li, and Xiujuan He, played a crucial role in realizing this innovative canteen design.
