Subway Stations Redefined: Muchuan Xu's Vision for Xi'an Metro Line 5

Muchuan Xu's design for Xi'an Metro Line 5 is a fusion of history and modernity, reflecting the profound historical heritage of Xi'an, a city known for its rich cultural legacy. With a total length of 25.359km and 21 stations, this project seamlessly integrates the city's historical significance with contemporary design elements, setting the stage for the city's sustainable future development.

The design of Xi'an Metro Line 5 aims to enhance social participation by incorporating ample light to distinguish and elevate the recognition of cultural stations, creating a unique and engaging experience for commuters.

One of the standout features of the project is the Ligongdaqujiangxiaoqu station, where the design is inspired by the logic and sequence of Xi'an University of Technology. The station's spatial model is derived logically, utilizing geometric triangles that are twisted, transformed, and arranged to form a set of triangular matrix modules, offering commuters a perception journey filled with a sense of the future.

The Yanxianglu station, located in Le You Yuan, draws inspiration from the poetic elements of branches and petals, with the ceiling adorned with petals and the pillars taking on a branch-like shape, creating a captivating visual experience for passengers.

Furthermore, the Xiyaotou station features curved surfaces and ripples arranged in forms, with the ceiling design incorporating ripple aluminum punching mesh and the use of lighting lines to outline vivid petals, enhancing the journey of perception through material and color comparison.

Xi'an Metro Line 5's design project commenced in 2018 and was completed in November 2020, with operations commencing in December 2020, marking a significant milestone in the city's transportation infrastructure.

Muchuan Xu's design for Xi'an Metro Line 5 has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2024, underscoring its exceptional creativity, technical prowess, and innovative approach to interior space, retail, and exhibition design.
