Expandy: A Monotone-Inspired Office Space Reimagined for Modern Functionality and Team Collaboration

Expandy is the latest office project by Shunsuke Ohe, CEO and founder of LUSTYdesign Inc., designed for a company exporting products from across Japan. Situated on the second floor of a vast logistics warehouse in Hyogo, the project was completed between February and May 2024. The design was inspired by the raw, dynamic, and monotone interiors of old European and American warehouses, reflecting the international nature of the business and the collaboration between the Spanish owner and Japanese designer. Through extensive discussions, they created a space that balances industrial minimalism with the warmth and vibrancy necessary for a productive office environment.

While the initial concept leaned toward an inorganic, monotone palette, Ohe introduced innovative features to ensure the space remained inviting and suitable for daily work. A louvered ceiling finished in the client's three logo colors and the strategic placement of colorful potted plants add lively accents, softening the industrial feel. The office layout was meticulously planned to maximize efficiency within its 115.89 sqm footprint, simulating staff and visitor movement to ensure optimal workflow. The president's office, located at the rear and separated by a glass partition, fosters both privacy and open communication, enhancing the overall sense of spaciousness and connectivity.

Technical challenges included updating an aging building with limited insulation and structural strength, which required careful integration of modern materials such as wood wool cement boards, cement, cloth, and PVC tiles without compromising the design vision. The transformation from an outdated, uninspired workspace to a motivational and visually striking office has not only improved staff morale but also elevated the company's image with clients, contributing to business growth. Expandy's recognition with the Bronze A' Design Award underscores its success in combining aesthetic innovation with practical workplace solutions.
