Pengfei He's Dongtou Passenger Port, located in Wenzhou, China, has been awarded the prestigious Golden A' Design Award 2025 for its innovative cruise terminal that blends the forms of seashells and Buddhist grottoes, creating a poetic gateway between urban and scenic zones while setting new standards in sustainable architecture.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dongtou Passenger Port, designed by renowned architect Pengfei He, has been recognized with the Golden A' Design Award 2025 in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category. Situated at Tantou Mountain Bay in Dongtou District, Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, the terminal stands as a new landmark, seamlessly connecting the city's urban fabric with its picturesque coastal scenery. Drawing inspiration from the curvilinear elegance of seashells and the spiritual essence of Buddhist grottoes, the design materializes as a "Maritime Mirage of Sacred Caves," symbolizing a colossal shell cradling a pearl and evoking a sense of poetic wonder.
The project's unique approach lies in its "Symbiosis of Mountain and Sea" concept, which is realized through terraced setback buildings and vegetated slopes that blend natural and built environments. The terminal's three-dimensional spatial organization longitudinally links the mountains to the coastline, while an 800-meter commercial waterfront belt integrates urban life with the sea. Vertically, the structure zones transport, commercial, and ecological corridors, forming a low-carbon, symbiotic entity that prioritizes sustainability and community engagement. The use of a curved concrete shell structure eliminates the need for large interior columns, creating expansive, open spaces that enhance passenger experience and architectural fluidity.
Spanning a site area of 21,000 square meters with a total floor area of 10,500 square meters, the Dongtou Passenger Port not only serves as a critical transportation hub but also as a vibrant public space that invites leisure and exploration. Overcoming the challenges of complex terrain, the design ensures seamless integration with the surrounding mountains and sea, providing accessible walking spaces and panoramic views. The project exemplifies how contemporary architecture can transcend cultural motifs, foster urban renewal, and set new benchmarks for sustainable development in public infrastructure.
