Bk Salon, a fine dining Thai restaurant designed by Phaithaya Banchakitikun and located on Sathupradit Road in Bangkok, has been awarded the prestigious Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award for 2025, honoring its unique integration of traditional Thai weaving techniques and modern architectural forms.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bk Salon, conceived by designer Phaithaya Banchakitikun, stands as a testament to the seamless fusion of Thai cultural heritage and contemporary architecture. Completed in 2023 and situated in the heart of Bangkok, the restaurant's design draws inspiration from traditional Thai woven products such as sticky rice containers and bamboo baskets. The building's facade features artificial rattan strands arranged in intricate patterns that evoke the artistry of Thai weaving, creating a visually striking and culturally resonant exterior.
The restaurant's layout adopts a cluster building format, forming an open courtyard that serves as a tranquil outdoor dining area shaded by trees. This arrangement not only enhances the dining atmosphere but also reflects the communal spirit of Thai culture. The interior spaces are defined by fully curved glass panels, allowing natural light to flood the restaurant and offering guests uninterrupted views of the dynamic interplay between the woven facade and the lush courtyard. The design accommodates a variety of dining experiences, including a café at the entrance, a main restaurant area, and a private Chef's Table on the second floor.
Throughout the design and construction process, the team conducted extensive research to achieve a harmonious balance between building proportions and negative space. Special attention was given to the feasibility of weaving patterns with real materials, ensuring that the facade's three-dimensional curves are both structurally sound and visually transparent. The project also overcame technical challenges related to integrating functional zones, such as discreetly positioning service areas and refining walkway and landscape details to maintain the integrity of the overall concept. The result is a restaurant that not only advances architectural innovation but also celebrates and preserves Thai cultural identity.
