Roof House, designed by Yahya Kashi and realized by Kasa Office, stands as a striking architectural intervention at the entrance of Kermanshah province, Gilane-Gharb, Iran. Completed in June 2024, this project transforms the flat roof of a car showroom into a thought-provoking residential space, questioning the very essence of what constitutes a home. By situating a house in a non-residential, industrial setting, Roof House disrupts conventional expectations and invites a re-examination of the boundaries between form, function, and context.
The design process was rooted in a deep exploration of the "generic house" model, with the aim of transfiguring its familiar elements through three conceptual strategies: destruction, explosion, and expansion. Destruction is manifested as the deliberate deformation of the house by external forces, while explosion exaggerates both structural and non-structural components, creating a sense of dynamic withdrawal from the original form. Expansion, meanwhile, is expressed through objects within the house-such as a rooftop pool-spreading and overtaking their surroundings, symbolizing the dominance and transformation of space.
To achieve this radical vision, the existing building's framework was extended and integrated using a Light Steel Frame (LSF) system, minimizing structural weight and ensuring seamless continuity with the original structure. The resulting residence, measuring 15 by 32 meters, challenges public perceptions of where and how a house should exist, offering a new perspective on domesticity within an industrial landscape. Roof House's innovative approach and technical execution have earned it the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, recognizing its significant contribution to the evolution of contemporary architecture.
