IRAN -- /ARCHITECTURE/newswire -- Nov 29, 2024

Yahya Kashi's Hidden Boxes, a residential house in Hamedan, Iran, has been honored with the Iron A' Design Award 2025 for its groundbreaking approach to deconstructing conventional spatial structures, blending architectural history with contemporary needs for privacy, climate adaptation, and cultural context.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hidden Boxes: Redefining Residential Space Through Deconstructed Architecture and Contextual Sensitivity

The Hidden Boxes project, designed by Yahya Kashi and realized by Kasa Office, stands as a bold response to the persistent monotony in contemporary residential architecture. Completed in Hamedan, Iran, between 2019 and 2021, the house challenges traditional spatial configurations by assembling independent volumetric boxes into a cohesive whole. This innovative approach addresses both internal architectural factors-such as spatial organization, Mass/Void relationships, and surface interactions-and external considerations like climate, privacy, and cultural needs.

Drawing inspiration from historical architectural concepts including Raumplan, Domino, and Universal Plan, Hidden Boxes synthesizes lessons from the past with the demands of modern urban life. The project's hybrid villa-apartment typology situates it at the intersection of low-rise single-family homes and high-density apartment buildings, reflecting the evolving urban fabric of Hamedan. The design's research-driven process included analysis of vernacular houses in the region, aiming to reinterpret their spatial logic while responding to the challenges of sunlight control, privacy, and contextual integration.

Constructed with a prestressed column system to support cantilevered slabs, the house features a facade of Fakhr o Madin bricks, bolted and anchored to the main structure. This material choice creates a transparent yet solid boundary, ensuring privacy and light control while harmonizing with local architectural traditions. The project's technical specifications-measuring 20.30 m x 12.45 m x 16.00 m-underscore its ambition to balance openness and enclosure, mass and void, and tradition with innovation. The recognition by the Iron A' Design Award highlights Hidden Boxes as a well-designed, practical, and forward-thinking contribution to residential architecture.
