Stay Gold: A Wabi-Sabi Inspired Urban Retreat Celebrating Light, Curves, and Minimalism

Stay Gold, designed by Chen Yu Chiu and completed in September 2023 in Taoyuan's Zhonglu district, reimagines residential living through a minimalist lens, earning the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award 2025. Inspired by the residence's soaring ceilings, abundant daylight, and scenic surroundings, the project strips away excess to reveal the home's innate beauty. Organic textures, fluid curves, and a restrained palette foster a tranquil, emotionally resonant environment that invites reflection and comfort.

The 110.7-square-meter residence features three bedrooms, two living areas, and two bathrooms, with a layout that maximizes openness and interaction. Custom-built curved partitions, suede-textured mineral paint, and handcrafted rattan elements transform structural constraints-such as protruding beams-into graceful focal points. The design's wabi-sabi philosophy embraces imperfection and authenticity, while advanced woodworking and sustainable materials ensure both technical refinement and environmental responsibility.

Stay Gold's spatial narrative guides residents through gentle transitions, balancing communal openness with intimate private zones. The interplay of natural light and soft architectural forms creates a seamless flow, enhancing daily experiences and fostering connectivity. Overcoming challenges of material availability and reconciling historical context with modern minimalism, Chen Yu Chiu's design stands as a testament to innovative craftsmanship and thoughtful spatial harmony.
