Ryohei Kanda's 303 Shirahama Italian stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of architecture, environment, and community. Completed in September 2023, the restaurant is located in Shirahama, a coastal town renowned for its stunning Shirarahama Beach. Drawing inspiration from the town's deep connection to the sea, Kanda designed the restaurant to reflect and refract the ocean's beauty within its interior, using custom polycarbonate partitions and a blue gradation film that evoke the shimmering water and ever-changing light of the beach outside.
The design's unique approach centers on sustainability and the reuse of the existing building, minimizing environmental impact while maximizing aesthetic appeal. The polycarbonate partitions, with their ribbed texture and glossy surface, not only mirror the ocean's reflective qualities but also transform the dining area into an immersive space that evolves throughout the day as sunlight changes. Pendant and bracket lights further enhance this dynamic atmosphere, creating a seamless visual connection between the restaurant's interior and the natural landscape beyond its walls.
Throughout the project, Kanda and his team conducted extensive studies to perfect the interplay of light, material, and layout, ensuring that the restaurant's ambiance would foster both comfort and a sense of belonging. By integrating elements of the local environment and prioritizing human connection, 303 Shirahama Italian offers guests a dining experience that is both innovative and deeply rooted in place. The project's recognition with the Bronze A' Design Award highlights its creative ingenuity and contribution to the quality of life in the community.
