Theater House: A Split-Level Residential Home Inspired by Theatrical Architecture and Nature

Theater House stands out as a remarkable residential project that reimagines home living through the lens of theatrical design. Conceived by Tonny Wirawan Suriadjaja and realized in Jakarta, Indonesia, the house features a split-level layout reminiscent of tiered theater seating, with a central open living space acting as the "stage." This innovative approach creates fluid connections between the poolside terrace, living and dining areas, and a covered multi-function terrace, all while maximizing natural light and ventilation.

The design's distinguishing feature is its seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. Large openings on both sides of the main living area allow for unobstructed views and the free circulation of air, while a planter box above the entrance serves as a visual buffer and introduces greenery into the home. Upstairs, private bedrooms open onto a terraced roof garden, further merging the boundaries between architecture and nature. The use of textured grey paint and natural wood throughout the house evokes the minimalist aesthetic of theater sets, creating a tranquil yet dynamic environment.

Construction of the Theater House utilized a special three-tone grey textured paint to mimic natural concrete, complemented by wooden planks and lush green elements. The result is a sunlit, air-ventilated living space that feels both modern and organic. With a building area of 15.4 by 10 by 12.7 meters on a 20.5 by 10-meter site, the house exemplifies efficient spatial planning and attention to detail. Recognized with the Silver A' Design Award, Theater House sets a new standard for residential architecture that prioritizes connectivity, openness, and harmony with its surroundings.
