Aka Teppanyaki, the latest creation by renowned architect Ayse Kubilay, has been honored with the Golden A' Design Award 2025 in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category. Situated within the luxurious Gloria Serenity Resort Hotel, this 190-square-meter restaurant reimagines Japanese and Asian cuisine dining through a captivating architectural lens. Kubilay's design draws inspiration from traditional Japanese elements such as Shoji and Fusuma, integrating sliding translucent doors and backlit lattice wall coverings to evoke a sense of Zen and layered tranquility.
The restaurant's centerpiece is an open kitchen and teppanyaki grill, surrounded by a bar that invites up to 20 guests to witness and interact with Far Eastern chefs as they prepare dishes in a dramatic, flame-filled culinary performance. The innovative three-dimensional ceiling system, crafted from wooden and metal pipes of varying sizes, not only conceals the venue's technical infrastructure but also reflects the vibrant reds of Japanese culture and the fiery spectacle of the teppanyaki grill. Pendant lights inspired by traditional Japanese fans illuminate the dining area, while the seamless glass partitions blur the boundaries between the 48-seat indoor space and the 60-seat open-air terrace, creating a fluid connection with the Mediterranean surroundings.
Aka Teppanyaki's design process was informed by meticulous research into Far Eastern culture, cuisine, and Zen philosophy. Every detail-from the combination of glossy and matte wood textures to the interplay of linen and velvet textiles-was chosen to enhance the sensory journey for guests. Overcoming significant technical challenges, such as concealing a large ventilation system above the open kitchen, Kubilay's inventive approach resulted in a harmonious and immersive environment. The restaurant stands as one of six dining venues at the resort, offering an unforgettable, interactive experience that bridges tradition and modernity, earning international acclaim for its architectural excellence.
