"Inked Elegant" Apartment Redesign Showcases Spatial Innovation and Refined Modern Aesthetics in Taiwan

"Inked Elegant," designed by Yu Xuan Lai, has been recognized with the Bronze A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award for 2025, celebrating its outstanding transformation of a 96-square-meter apartment in Taiwan. The project began in April 2022 and concluded in February 2023, focusing on overcoming the limitations of the original layout-such as obstructed ventilation, inefficient movement lines, and uneven space distribution-by reimagining the entire floor plan. Through strategic wall leveling, the removal of unnecessary compartments, and the bold integration of dark wood textures, the design achieves a harmonious balance between openness and privacy, creating a stable and personalized home environment.

The apartment's color palette draws inspiration from the owner's affinity for dark wood, translated into a sophisticated blend of black, gray, and white. These tones are complemented by board and stretched leather fabric, with selective wood accents enhancing the overall atmosphere. The living, dining, and kitchen areas are now seamlessly connected, promoting family interaction, while glass sliding doors in the kitchen provide both openness and protection from cooking fumes. The master bedroom and bathroom continue the design's modern, cohesive aesthetic, with thoughtful storage solutions and a sense of hotel-like comfort and privacy.

A key challenge addressed in the project was the presence of large structural beams and columns, which were cleverly incorporated into the design. For example, the living room's structural column was integrated with a mirrored shoe cabinet to maximize storage and visual space, while the TV wall visually extends across the room, breaking through physical constraints. Lighting design further enhances the ambiance, with box lights, wall lights, and indirect illumination that can be adjusted to suit different moods. The result is a home that not only meets the functional needs of its residents but also elevates their daily living experience through refined design and meticulous attention to detail.
