Lai Hao Gift Shop: A Contemporary Celebration of Taiwanese Creativity and Heritage in Ximending

Lai Hao, designed by Wan-Ting Hung and located in the heart of Taipei's Ximending, has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award 2025 in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category. The project transforms a historic 66.1-square-meter shop into a lively destination for both locals and tourists, seamlessly blending retro aesthetics with modern trends. The design features neon art inspired by iconic Taiwanese landmarks, vintage lightboxes, and a warm palette of wood and rattan, creating an inviting atmosphere that celebrates the island's creative spirit.

Distinctive elements such as neon tubing outlining Ximen and Taipei 101, a shop sign reflecting the colorful Gaji bag, and flexible display systems set Lai Hao apart from conventional gift shops. Movable islands and adjustable pegboards allow for dynamic product presentations, while eco-friendly materials and terrazzo flooring add texture and sustainability. The thoughtful lighting plan and natural color scheme ensure a gentle, harmonious shopping experience, connecting visitors with both the past and present of Taiwanese culture.

The project overcame significant challenges, including structural renovations to address leaks and outdated infrastructure in the decades-old building. Careful planning was required to harmonize the diverse colors of displayed products and optimize the store's layout for exploration and engagement. Since its completion in February 2024, Lai Hao has received enthusiastic feedback from both the shop owner and customers, who praise its cozy ambiance and lively design. The award highlights Lai Hao's success in elevating the retail experience and promoting local creativity on an international stage.
