Japanese architect Tomohiro Araki's Aperitio House, a one-story wooden residence in northern Tottori Prefecture overlooking the Sea of Japan, has been honored with the Bronze A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award 2025 for its innovative approach to blending indoor comfort with the natural landscape.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Aperitio House, designed by Tomohiro Araki, stands as a testament to the Japanese philosophy of harmony between people, objects, and their environment. Completed between August and December 2023, this villa-like residence is nestled within a Quasi-National Park Geopark in northern Tottori Prefecture, directly facing the Sea of Japan. The design draws inspiration from the uniquely Japanese appreciation of nature and the four seasons, seeking to create a tranquil retreat where residents can unwind from daily life while remaining deeply connected to their surroundings.
The house's single-story wooden structure features low eaves, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the coastal landscape. Araki prioritized a simple exterior to avoid overt symbolism, ensuring the design remains timeless and unobtrusive. The north-facing façade, exposed to strong sea winds, is clad in durable galvalume steel sheet, matching the roof for both aesthetic coherence and practical maintenance. The west entrance is recessed to minimize wind impact, while the south side boasts generous openings that flood the interior with natural light and facilitate ventilation, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living spaces.
Inside, residents enjoy panoramic views of the southern landscape, experiencing the subtle changes of the four seasons from the comfort of their home. Architectural details, such as deep eaves, high side lights, and a carefully designed roof gutter, not only enhance the visual connection to nature but also create sensory experiences-like the soothing sound of rain forming a water curtain along the eaves. The out-living room, separated by glass, offers both openness and security, reinforcing the home's central theme of coexistence with nature. Aperitio House's thoughtful integration of light, wind, sound, and scenery exemplifies a refined approach to sustainable, context-sensitive design.
The Bronze A' Design Award recognizes Aperitio House for its outstanding creativity, technical skill, and meaningful contribution to quality of life. By embracing best practices in architecture and environmental harmony, Tomohiro Araki's work sets a new standard for residential design along Japan's scenic coastline.
