Oriental Movie Metropolis Grand Theatre: A Symbol of Qingdao's Marine Culture

Dr. Gao Shanxing introduces the Oriental Movie Metropolis Grand Theatre, a stunning exhibition hall inspired by the blue sea and silver conch, symbolizing Qingdao's marine culture. The grand theatre, completed on November 15, 2017, and officially opened on April 28, 2018, stands as a shining landmark in Qingdao, representing the oldest marine creature, the conch.

The theatre, with its curved form resembling a seaside conch, perfectly embodies the local identity and culture, utilizing parametric design for efficient construction and a visually compelling facade. Covering an area of 258334 sq. ft, the theatre's construction process involved complex skin, nonlinear structure, and precise material positioning, achieved through the use of BIM technology.

The Oriental Movie Metropolis Grand Theatre serves as a cultural building for the International Movie Festival, hosting opening and closing ceremonies, award ceremonies, and various artistic performances. Adjacent to the east side, the Show Theatre project jointly creates a significant landmark building on the west coast of Huangdao District, further enhancing the city's cultural landscape.

Throughout the design and construction process, forward BIM technology was employed to ensure the seamless translation of the initial design concept into the final built structure. The theatre's spirally rising complex curve form, horizontal and vertical composite aluminum panel curtain wall structure, and the deformation control of the steel structure presented significant technical and creative challenges, all of which were successfully overcome.

Embedded within Starry Island's bay, the Oriental Movie Metropolis Grand Theatre seamlessly blends with the coastal city's spirit, symbolizing the transfusion of Qingdao culture. Dr. Gao Shanxing's architectural masterpiece not only serves as a performance space but also deepens the emotional connection between visitors and the environment, creating a theatrical experience within the landscape.
