Oriental Movie Metropolis Theater by Gao Shanxing

Architect Gao Shanxing's Oriental Movie Metropolis Theater in Qingdao is a breathtaking exhibition hall inspired by the conch and the marine culture of the region. The theater's unique design and technological innovation are set to redefine the architectural landscape. The theater's concept draws from the conch, one of the oldest marine creatures, and integrates the unique marine culture of Qingdao to create an abstract and dynamic shape with vertical conch texture. The theater stands in beautiful contrast to the Grand Theater, with one exuding quietness and the other liveliness, adding vitality to the surroundings.

The heart of the theater lies on the ground, embracing natural aesthetics as the core principle and starting point of inspiration. The architectural performance functions are demonstrated through customization, material shaping systems, and an elegant spatial organization, reflecting the locality, environmental perception, and the spirit of the times. The theater's curvilinear form language implies multi-level metaphors, setting it apart from traditional designs.

Constructed using forward BIM technology, the theater's shape was defined as a hyperboloid of negative Gaussian curvature with different curvatures everywhere, posing significant challenges in processing and cost. The project size spans 231,424 square feet, and the theater officially opened on April 29, 2019, in Qingdao. The design was awarded Platinum in the A' Architecture, Building, and Structure Design Award in 2022, recognizing its exceptional innovation and contribution to societal wellbeing.
