Residential Design Reflecting Eternal Bond and Timeless Elegance

Po Chuan Kao's Floating Light design is a testament to the eternal loving bond between a father and his children, inspired by the work of a famous poet, X. Sung, of Sung Dynasty. The design aimed to create a domain for the family to congregate and interact, solidifying the fatherly presence for the children after a long absence. The avant-garde design vocabulary and the use of light and shadow create a visually harmonious yet contrasting space, conveying the time and space concepts of the designers.

Situated in a 15-year-old four-story residential building in Taichung City, the design added difficulty to the vertical spatial demarcation, circulation, and light guidance. The use of imported natural masonry materials and mineral paints created a simple, repetitive yet rhythmic spatial quality, enriching the internal experiences with natural elements and design techniques.

With a predominant usage of mineral paint as the compositional base, the design created a visual rhythm inspired by the classic game of Snake, bringing time into the spatial configuration. The atrium design brings in ample natural light, forming dramatic changes at different times, redefining lighting design and creating a light touch of spatial ambiance and visual tension.

The project was completed in June 2019, and the design team spent 2 to 3 months communicating with the client on concepts and requirements, overcoming creative, technical, and research challenges to realize the vision of the Floating Light design. The design was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2020, recognizing its outstanding technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill.
