Po Chuan Kao's "Quiet Boundary" residence in Taichung City, Taiwan, has been honored with the Bronze A' Design Award 2025 for its inventive approach to spatial demarcation and modern family living, blending calm aesthetics with functional depth in a 109-square-meter apartment completed in January 2024.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Po Chuan Kao's "Quiet Boundary" project stands out in Taiwan's residential design landscape by challenging the prevailing "less is more" trend. Instead, the design prioritizes the nuanced needs of its occupants, creating a home that is both serene and deeply functional. The project's central theme of calmness is expressed through a dark, modern palette and a layout that fosters both privacy and interaction among family members. By employing inversion and subtle spatial layering, the apartment achieves a sophisticated depth that enhances the experience of home.
A key innovation in "Quiet Boundary" is the reimagined entrance area, featuring a sculptural stone door frame that redefines the relationship between the entrance, kitchen, and dining room. This architectural intervention maintains ample natural light while establishing clear circulation and distinct zones, resulting in a tranquil yet connected living environment. The master bedroom, concealed behind a gray wall and illuminated by natural light, features a sloping ceiling that evokes a sense of openness and relaxation, reminiscent of a vacation retreat.
Material selection further distinguishes the project, with iron, titanium-plated finishes, imported mineral paints, glass, and marble contributing to a refined, modern aesthetic. Each wall is hand-finished with a unique rendering technique, creating subtle transitions and a harmonious visual flow throughout the space. The apartment's layout, with the kitchen positioned at the front and a two-way sofa facilitating flexible circulation in the living room, supports both functional adaptability and spatial fluidity. Residents benefit from expansive mountain and river views, a calming palette of grays, and a layout that balances openness with seclusion, fostering both relaxation and family connection.
