Frames Office Project: Nature-Inspired, Low-Carbon Wooden Workspace Design in Osaka

"Frames," designed by Michihiro Matsuo and Metaph Architect Associates, is a pioneering office building that redefines the relationship between architecture, nature, and community. Completed in December 2024 in Osaka, the project stands out for its organic design, featuring distinctive window frames and abundant greenery that seamlessly connect the workspace with the surrounding environment. The structure's open façade and floating frames not only create visual interest but also foster a sense of openness while maintaining privacy for employees.

The three-story, 768.80 m² building is constructed primarily from wood, a deliberate choice to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability in a sector dominated by steel and concrete. Advanced structural analysis and the use of large-section laminated timber with metal joints ensure the building's safety and resilience, especially important in Japan's earthquake-prone context. The design integrates horizontal eaves at ground level with expansive upper windows, balancing sleek aesthetics with functional benefits such as natural light and ventilation.

Frames' interior prioritizes employee comfort and well-being, with workspaces situated above the second floor and strategically placed greenery to soften views and enhance privacy. The project's research-driven approach included surveys and tours to assess the psychological impact of organic design, aiming to create a next-generation office that harmonizes with its locale. The recognition by the Silver A' Design Award highlights Frames' technical excellence, artistic innovation, and its role as a model for sustainable, community-oriented office architecture.
