Hydro-Bridge by Xiyao Wang Wins Silver A' Design Award for Innovative Climate-Responsive Infrastructure

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA -- /ARCHITECTURE/newswire -- Sep 04, 2024

Xiyao Wang's Hydro-Bridge, located over the Nakkhu River in Chyasikot, Nepal, has been honored with the Silver A' Design Award 2025 for its adaptive design that seamlessly integrates public space, water management, and resilient infrastructure to address the region's challenging monsoon climate.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hydro-Bridge: Adaptive Pedestrian Bridge and Water Storage System for Nepal's Monsoon Climate

Hydro-Bridge, designed by Xiyao Wang, stands as a pioneering solution to the environmental and social challenges faced by communities in Nepal's monsoon-prone regions. Conceived in 2019 and realized through advanced parametric design and steel construction, the bridge spans the Nakkhu River in Chyasikot, offering a multifunctional space that adapts to the dramatic seasonal shifts characteristic of the area. During the dry season, Hydro-Bridge serves as a pedestrian and light vehicle crossing, while in the rainy season, it transforms into a water storage system and secure campsite, providing critical resources and refuge for the local community.

Inspired by the fluidity of natural water systems and vernacular architecture, Hydro-Bridge merges infrastructure with public space, fostering social engagement and environmental resilience. The structure's glass roof collects rainwater, while its robust steel frame ensures durability against intense monsoon conditions. The bridge's design allows for seamless transitions between its various functions, reflecting a thoughtful response to both the needs of the community and the demands of the natural environment. Its adaptability not only supports urban resilience but also creates a vibrant social hub that remains accessible and useful year-round.

The realization of Hydro-Bridge required overcoming significant technical and creative challenges, including budget constraints, material selection, and the need for interdisciplinary collaboration among architects, engineers, and hydrologists. Extensive research, including site analysis, climate modeling, and user behavior studies, informed the dual-purpose design, ensuring that the bridge could withstand seasonal extremes while enhancing public utility. The project's success demonstrates the potential for infrastructure to serve as both a functional asset and a catalyst for sustainable community development, earning it recognition as a top-tier example of engineering and design excellence.
