Urban Symbiosis, a groundbreaking mixed-use tower project by architect Xiyao Wang, has been honored with the Golden A' Design Award 2025 for its pioneering approach to energy efficiency, public access, and urban connectivity in New York City, seamlessly integrating residential, office, and public spaces above the 7 Train station.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Urban Symbiosis, designed by Xiyao Wang, reimagines the traditional high-rise by horizontally splitting residential and office spaces into two interconnected towers. This unique approach optimizes energy usage by balancing the differing time demands of living and working, reducing pressure on the city's power grid. Located above the 7 Train station in New York City, the project integrates a central subway entrance, sunken garden, and extensive shared amenities to create a vibrant, accessible urban hub.
Inspired by the dynamic interplay between work and home life, Urban Symbiosis draws on principles of urban connectivity and research into mixed-use high-rise buildings. The design employs advanced parametric tools and high-performance materials to maximize energy efficiency and public access. By replacing traditional vertical stacking with a horizontal division, the building fosters seamless connections between private and public spaces, encouraging constant interaction and community engagement.
With 56 residential floors, 43 office floors, and retail at ground and underground levels, Urban Symbiosis offers a diverse range of spaces for living, working, and socializing. Shared amenities such as restaurants, co-working areas, and gyms are strategically placed to promote interaction between residents and office workers. The project's innovative layout and commitment to sustainability set a new benchmark for mixed-use developments, as recognized by its Golden A' Design Award win in 2025.
