Taipei-based designer Lo Fang Ming has been honored with the Bronze A' Design Award 2025 for "Belonging," a 512-square-meter residential project in Taiwan that reimagines multi-generational living through linear design elements, maximizing light, space, and family connection in a challenging layout completed in May 2024.

Lo Fang Ming's latest project, "Belonging," has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award 2025 in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category. Located in Taiwan and completed in May 2024, this 512-square-meter residence was conceived for a family spanning three generations, including an entrepreneur, adult children, and young grandchildren. The design addresses the challenges of a narrow, elongated layout and low ceilings by employing continuous linear grille elements, stained wood veneer parquet, and mirrored ceilings to create a sense of openness and unity.
The concept draws inspiration from the Eastern family tradition, using the grid motif as a metaphor for generational continuity and growth. These linear elements extend from the first floor to upper levels, seamlessly transforming into display boundaries, storage solutions, and spatial partitions. Mirrors strategically placed on the ceiling amplify natural light and visually expand the space, dissolving the limitations imposed by the building's original structure. The design's flexibility allows each family member to enjoy both communal and private areas tailored to their needs, fostering interaction while respecting individual privacy.
In addition to living and sleeping quarters, the residence features dedicated spaces for socializing, working, and reading, thoughtfully planned for the elderly, adults, and children. The top floor serves as a secondary gathering hub, complete with entertainment amenities and an outdoor terrace that brings nature into daily life. Overcoming the challenge of integrating multiple functions-such as two dining rooms, a living area, and sacrificial space-while maintaining open sightlines and abundant daylight, "Belonging" stands out as a refined example of how design can strengthen family bonds and improve quality of life. The project's recognition at the A' Design Awards highlights its technical ingenuity, creative vision, and contribution to contemporary residential design.
