Refurbished HKHS Exhibition Centre Showcases Interactive Design and Community Engagement

The newly reopened Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) Exhibition Centre, designed by Oval Design Limited and launched in March 2024, offers a transformative visitor experience that blends technology, storytelling, and community engagement. Responding to the pressing need for public trust in housing solutions, the Centre's design aims to connect emotionally with families who often wait years for public rental housing, providing them with a sense of hope and reassurance in HKHS's enduring mission.

Occupying a 200-square-meter space, the Centre is organized into three thematic zones-'Creating Homes for the Community,' 'The Housing Ladder,' and 'Creating Homes for Sustainable Living.' Each area features a mix of physical displays, interactive digital screens, and hands-on games, all arranged in a circular flow to encourage exploration. Notable innovations include an interactive kiosk operated by a vintage telephone, a 270-degree LED dome offering immersive VR experiences without goggles, 3D naked-eye animation, and real-time polling with instant visual feedback. The centerpiece-a symbolic tree that visitors can 'irrigate'-embodies the Centre's people-first philosophy and the bridging of citizens with housing policy.

Designing for inclusivity and engagement, Oval Design Limited overcame significant spatial and technical challenges, such as acute-angled layouts and low ceiling clearance, by integrating advanced motion-sensing technology and customizing the VR dome for the unique space. Extensive user research informed the Centre's approachable tone and interactive features, ensuring visitors of all ages and backgrounds feel welcomed and inspired. The result is a warm, inviting environment that not only celebrates HKHS's 70-year legacy but also reinforces its unwavering commitment to Hong Kong's future housing needs.
