The S90 Residence, designed by Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan, is a two-generation dwelling located in the north part of Tainan County, Taiwan. The architectural design draws inspiration from the passive design approach to articulate the surrounding environment. The white façade matches the green field around the site and reduces the heat gain from strong direct sunlight. The sloped roof optimizes the best sun exposure for the future extension of the Photovoltaic solar panel.
The residence features a steel structure with an exterior panel finish. The exterior paint uses a special coating called LOTAS, made with century-old reservoir sludge, for sustainable construction material. The total development area is 324 square meters.
The space is designed to accommodate three separate functions, with public spaces shared with parents and a young couple, while providing privacy for each family. The second floor of the two-story building is for the young couple, while the single-story volume belongs to the parents. The entrance, living space, and the kitchen dining are located on the first floor.
The project faced the creative challenge of developing a sustainable dwelling in the southern part of Taiwan, which experiences harsh sun exposure with high temperatures. The volume of the building was examined with solar exposure calculation software to articulate window openings for balancing interior illumination from natural light.
Daisuke Nagatomo, the designer of S90 Residence, graduated from Meiji University in Tokyo and pursued his passion for architecture at Columbia University, where he received a master's degree in advanced architectural design. Nagatomo has a rich background in architecture and is currently an assistant professor at National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. The project was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2021, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative features that meet professional and industrial requirements.
