Renovation of Science Classroom in Taipei City

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Classroom Renovation for Innovative Science Education

Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan's award-winning design, the Huajiang Science Lab, redefines the traditional classroom space into an innovative environment for scientific exploration and learning. The project, which commenced in December 2022 and concluded in August 2023, is located in Taipei City, Taiwan.

The 108 square meter space features a unique layout, with a primary teaching area and an exploration zone. The design incorporates a teacher's preparation desk strategically positioned for efficient student management and a handwashing station to streamline equipment cleaning. The striking curved ceiling symbolizes centripetal force towards learning, reflecting the universe's sky and nurturing curiosity about nature.

This specialized classroom serves as an experimental environment where children engage in fundamental scientific practices such as observation, inquiry, hypothesis generation, experimentation, and inference drawing within the natural realm. As education evolves, classrooms must adapt to contemporary needs. In addition to updating essential equipment, provisions for convenient access to and from the classroom are imperative. Spatial reconfigurations aim to facilitate increased interaction between teachers and students, fostering a relaxed and conducive learning atmosphere.

The classroom is equipped with U-shaped student desks facing a large touch screen at the center, designed for science experiment classes. The innovative design challenges were overcome by creating a seamless connection between the main classroom and a small library space, enhancing students' emotional states through color and material choices.

Daisuke Nagatomo, a distinguished architect and educator, and Minnie Jan, have received the Silver A' Design Award for their outstanding expertise and innovation in interior space, retail, and exhibition design. The Huajiang Science Lab stands as a testament to their commitment to creating remarkable, technically advanced, and artistically skillful designs.
