Waterway, a school library project by Vincent Li, reimagines the traditional learning space to create a harmonious blend of nature and education. Located in Ho Yu College and Primary School, Hong Kong, this 3900 sq.ft library reflects the unique geographical environment of Lantau Island, surrounded by the sea and natural landscapes.
The library's design incorporates sea blue, cement, and wood elements, symbolizing the nurturing and peaceful experience of reading amidst the structured city and natural surroundings. The innovative use of space and color creates a relaxing, self-paced study environment, encouraging students to linger and immerse themselves in knowledge.
The library's unique features include a ship-inspired concept, where the learning atmosphere is likened to a breeze that guides students on their educational journey. The space seamlessly transitions from a borrowing desk and bookshelf area to a versatile teaching space, fostering interaction and engagement among students and librarians.
The project faced challenges in reimagining the traditional spatial design, ultimately overcoming them with a diagonal linear design that breathes new life into the space. Waterway's innovative approach earned it the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2023, recognizing its outstanding expertise and creativity in interior space design.
