Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan's Art and Numeracy Academy, completed in March 2024 in Taipei City, has been honored with the Bronze A' Design Award for its creative approach to making mathematics practical, accessible, and enjoyable through a modern, eco-friendly interior that fosters collaborative and child-centered learning.

The Art and Numeracy Academy, designed by Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan, reimagines the traditional classroom as a vibrant, interactive space where children can explore mathematics through play and creativity. Located in Taipei City and completed in March 2024, the 200-square-meter institute integrates geometric forms-squares, triangles, and circles-alongside L-System-inspired curves to create open, inviting, and aesthetically pleasing environments. The use of bright tones and warm wood textures enhances comfort, while the spatial layout encourages both independent discovery and collaborative learning.
Central to the academy's philosophy is the mission of "Unlocking Key Learning Through Play." The multifunctional area beneath a large, tree-like structure serves as a hub for reading, discussions, and group activities, fostering interaction between children and adults. All interior finishes utilize environmentally friendly materials, including green building products and sound-absorbing wood wool panels, ensuring a safe and sustainable atmosphere. Advanced digital equipment supports STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) education, while thoughtful features like child-height sinks and restrooms empower younger learners to navigate the space independently.
Art and Numeracy Academy's design also features a prominent display window, providing a platform for students and teachers to showcase innovative mathematical projects throughout the year. This approach not only highlights the creative outcomes of the curriculum but also strengthens the connection between the academy and the broader community. The project overcame the challenge of balancing technical requirements with a nurturing, playful environment, resulting in a space where children can develop numerical reasoning, creativity, and emotional resilience. The academy's recognition with the Bronze A' Design Award underscores its contribution to quality of life improvements and sets a new standard for educational interiors.
